It is estimated that 140
million women world wide have undergone some form of FGM.
The majority of these women are from Africa and FGM is
practiced in about 28 African countries (see map). It is
estimated that 85% of FGM is Type I or II and that around
15% is Type III. Type III is practiced predominantly in
Somalia, Sudan, Djibouti and Eritrea. Around 2 million girls
and women are thought to be circumcised each year. |
